Italy Implements Strict Measures on Migrant Ages

The Italian government aims to reduce the number of repatriations of undocumented migrants, particularly adult migrants who falsely claim to be minors. This is in line with the latest government decree, as reported by the Italian newspaper "Il Messaggero."

Until now, children who arrived in Italy without parents or legal guardians could benefit from a special protection system that assumed they were minors. However, under the new decree, the police will have greater authority and tools, including body measurements and X-rays, to verify the age of individuals.

Under this new decree, minors over the age of 16 will be placed in institutions for a limited time within reception centers designated for adults. The reason for this change is that many local mayors have complained about the lack of facilities available to accommodate minors and the associated maintenance costs.

These shelters have faced criticism for their dire conditions, and humanitarian organizations have expressed concerns about this recent measure.

Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi emphasized that the new rules would align with European legislation regarding the protection of minor migrants. However, he also clarified that those whose ages cannot be verified will undergo strict physical measurements and X-rays. Piantedosi also highlighted the importance of increasing the number of detention centers for undocumented migrants, as it is likely that many will be repatriated to their home countries.

The decree also aims to increase deportations. Among other measures, legal immigrants living in Italy may be deported if they are deemed a threat to public order or national security.

These measures come amid a flow of migrants from North Africa to Europe, including the island of Lampedusa in southern Italy.
