Italy faced severe travel chaos on Monday after a nationwide aviation strike disrupted operations at major airports across the country, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and forcing airlines to cancel hundreds of flights.

The strike, led by the UNICA alongside ground service workers, halted air traffic operations for eight hours and heavily affected airports in Rome, Milan, Naples, and other major cities.

Several airlines announced large-scale cancellations in anticipation of the disruption. easyJet reportedly canceled around 180 flights, representing nearly 40 percent of its scheduled operations in Italy, while ITA Airways suspended approximately 130 flights.

Other major carriers, including Lufthansa and Ryanair, warned passengers about extended delays and operational disruptions expected to continue for several days due to aircraft and crew scheduling issues.

Italian media described the situation as a “black day” for travelers, with crowded terminals, long waiting times, and widespread confusion across airports.

As flights were canceled, thousands of passengers turned to rail transport as an alternative.

High-speed train routes between Milan and Rome quickly saw ticket demand surge, with reports indicating that more than 60 percent of seats sold out within hours.

The strike follows the collapse of negotiations between unions and Italy’s transport authorities over staffing levels, working conditions, and productivity-related compensation demands.

With unions already threatening another strike later this month, concerns are growing over continued instability in Italy’s transport sector ahead of the busy summer travel season.
