Italy has temporarily closed its embassy in Tehran and relocated diplomatic staff to Azerbaijan due to security concerns linked to the escalating war involving Iran.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced Thursday that the Italian embassy in Tehran would be shut temporarily, with personnel transferred to Baku.

Tajani said the move was taken for security reasons as tensions continue to rise across the region.

He also confirmed that a recent operation allowed around 50 Italians, including diplomats and civilians wishing to leave Iran, to cross the border into Azerbaijan safely.

The minister noted that several other countries have also closed their embassies in Tehran in response to the deteriorating security situation. Italy had already reduced its diplomatic presence in the country before the latest decision.

Despite the closure, Tajani stressed that diplomatic relations with Iran have not been severed and that embassy operations will temporarily continue from Baku.

The decision comes as the United States and Israel continue a military campaign against Iran that began on Feb. 28, reportedly killing Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and dozens of senior officials while missile and drone exchanges persist across the region.
