Italy has reaffirmed its strong support for Montenegro’s accession to the European Union, highlighting the strategic importance of reintegrating the Western Balkans into the European framework.

The endorsement came during a meeting in Rome between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her Montenegrin counterpart Milojko Spajić.

According to a statement issued by Italy’s Council of Ministers on Tuesday, the two leaders held in-depth discussions on key international issues, with a focus on regional stability and security.

Prime Minister Meloni emphasized that EU enlargement remains a priority for Italy and stressed the importance of accelerating Montenegro’s path toward full EU membership.

She reiterated that the stability of the Western Balkans is essential for broader European security and prosperity.

The meeting also served to strengthen the historic relationship between Italy and Montenegro. Both sides expressed a shared commitment to enhancing cooperation in key sectors, including energy, infrastructure, defense, security, and the fight against transnational organized crime.

The talks reflect growing momentum behind the EU’s enlargement agenda and underscore Italy’s role as a key advocate for closer integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union.
