During his address at the opening session of the International Meeting for Peace: Daring Peace, organized by the Community of Sant’Egidio in Rome, Italian President Sergio Mattarella expressed his deep appreciation for His Eminence Prof. Ahmad At-Tayyeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, commending his prominent role in spreading the culture of peace, promoting human fraternity, and consolidating the values of positive coexistence and acceptance of others.
In his speech, President Mattarella quoted several statements made by the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar on peace, saying: “At this moment, I would like to remind you of the words of the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, who spoke of the necessity of working to promote human fraternity and to strengthen interfaith dialogue.
He emphasized that we must all raise the banner of peace instead of the banner of victory, give precedence to reason and wisdom, sit together at the table of dialogue, and have the courage to achieve true peace.”
The Italian President stressed the importance of listening to the voices of wise religious leaders and figures such as Pope Francis, head of the Catholic Church, and His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Prof. Ahmad At-Tayyeb.
He praised the historic Document on Human Fraternity cosigned by both leaders, underscoring that the forces of domination and control must be met with the soft power and moral authority of religious institutions. He also emphasized the importance of amplifying this voice to achieve peace and to create a world free of conflict and war for future generations.
