Italian media reported on Saturday that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will travel to Florida to meet with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.
According to the newspaper Messaggero, the Italian Prime Minister's visit to the United States will take place ahead of outgoing President Joe Biden's planned trip to Rome on January 9.
The newspaper noted that one of the key topics of the upcoming meeting with Trump could be the situation concerning Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, who was detained in Tehran in mid-December 2024.
Iranian authorities have indicated that her release is contingent on a prisoner exchange involving an Iranian engineer arrested at Milan Airport just days before Sala, at the request of the United States, in connection with allegations of violating sanctions related to drone technology transfers to Iran.
