Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio thanked Egyptian people and government after receiving a medical shipment, the second of its kind from Egypt to Italy within one month.
“The medical aid that this coming these days from abroad is essential to support our hospitals. Today also Egypt and Ukraine have shown that they are in solidarity with our people,” Di Maio tweeted on Saturday.
He added that this is “A gesture that we greatly appreciated.”
It’s noteworthy that President Abdel Fattah El Sisi directed the Egyptian Armed Forces to prepare and equip two military planes carrying quantities of medical supplies, protective suits and disinfection materials and send them to Italy.
This move comes in the context of Egypt’s support and solidarity with friendly countries and in the context of historical relations and ties between the two countries, according to statements given by Egyptian Presidential Spokesperson Ambassador Bassam Rady on Saturday.
“This move shall contribute to alleviating the burden on Italy in its current ordeal, especially in light of its severe shortage of medicines, medical supplies, and protection and protection tools amid the rapid spread of the Corona virus and the high rate of injuries and deaths in Italy,” Rady added.
The presidential spokesperson noted that this assistance comes from Egypt's pioneering role towards friendly countries around the world, in addition to providing permanent support and solidarity in times of adversity and crisis.
On Friday, President Sisi extended his warm condolences to Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte over the victims of coronavirus in Italy, according to a Wednesday statement by Rady.
On March 22, EgyptAir cargo plan arrived in Malpensa airport, Italy, carrying protective medical supplies. The shipment included about one million protective face masks from Egypt to the Italian side to help confront the coronavirus. It was sent to the Italian region of Lombardy.
In total, Italian authorities have recorded 115,242 cases and 13,915 deaths as of Thursday, April 2nd.
