The League of Arab States on Friday strongly condemned Israel's decision to recognize the breakaway region of Somaliland as an independent state, calling it a "provocative move" that threatens regional stability.
Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit stated that the move violates international law and undermines the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia. In a press release, Aboul Gheit described the recognition as a "flagrant infringement" of the United Nations Charter.
The League’s spokesperson, Gamal Roshdy, reaffirmed that the Arab League considers Somaliland an integral part of Somalia. He warned that such unilateral actions by Israel constitute "unacceptable interference" in Somalia's internal affairs and set a dangerous precedent for international security.
The condemnation follows an announcement by the Israeli Prime Minister on Dec. 26. Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991, remains internationally unrecognized by most nations and global bodies.
