A ceasefire between the United States and Iran has brought no relief to civilians in Lebanon, where Israeli airstrikes intensified on Wednesday, sharply worsening an already dire humanitarian situation.
Strikes hit multiple areas, including the capital Beirut, as violence escalated despite broader regional efforts to contain the conflict. Aid agencies say repeated surges in fighting in recent weeks have driven up humanitarian needs, raising concerns about their capacity to respond.
According to UN News, Blerta Aliko, a senior official with the United Nations Development Programme, said the situation had reached a “critical” stage after heavy bombardment erupted near her location while she was providing an update on conditions in the country.
Speaking later from a basement at UN premises, Aliko said the intensity of the strikes was placing additional strain on already stretched resources, as agencies struggle to keep pace with rising demand for aid.
The escalation underscores the limited impact of the U.S.-Iran truce on the ground in Lebanon, where civilians continue to face the brunt of ongoing hostilities and deteriorating living conditions.
