At least 16 people were killed in an Israeli strike on a school that was housing displaced Palestinian families in Al-Nuseirat, central Gaza, on Saturday, as reported by the territory’s health ministry and the official Palestinian news agency.
The Israeli military has stated that it is investigating the report. The health ministry confirmed that the attack on the school resulted in at least 16 deaths and more than 50 injuries.
Mahmoud Basal, the spokesperson for the Gaza Civil Emergency Service, expressed concern that the number of fatalities could increase due to the critical condition of many of the wounded. He stated that the attack on the school has made it unsafe for families to seek shelter anywhere in the enclave.
An earlier airstrike on a house in the camp claimed the lives of at least 10 people and caused injuries to many others, according to medics.
According to the Gaza health ministry’s daily update on casualties in the ongoing conflict, Israeli military strikes across the enclave have resulted in the deaths of at least 29 Palestinians in the past 24 hours and injuries to 100 others.
Five local journalists were among those killed in separate airstrikes, bringing the total number of journalists killed since October last year to 158, according to the Hamas-led Gaza government media office.
