Israel said on Friday it had appointed its president's brother, former general Michael Herzog, as its next ambassador to the United States.

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced the news, adding that Herzog’s appointment will be brought before the cabinet for its approval as early as Sunday.

“The prime minister congratulated Herzog on his nomination and wished him great success in the new role, given the significant challenges in the political arena,” Bennett’s office said.

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid also welcomed the announcement, calling Herzog “exactly the right person to serve in this strategically important role.”

Interestingly, Herzog, 69, is well-connected in Washington, including with senior members of the Biden administration.

Herzog, served in the Israeli military for 40 years, was chief of staff to four defence ministers. He began his military career in the 1973 and served as head of the IDF’s Strategic Division.

Moreover, he has served as military secretary to defence minister Shaul Mofaz and chief of staff to defense minister Ehud Barak.
