Israeli police threw stun grenades in Tel Aviv, after scuffles broke out in separate parts of the country, during protests known as the "Day of Trouble", at a time when lawmakers intend to advance a controversial judicial reform that opponents consider a threat to democracy.

"Israel is not a dictatorship, Israel is not Hungary," chanted protesters, who blocked the main highway between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, waving flags.

Police on horseback in Tel Aviv tried to prevent protesters from crossing roadblocks, while traffic jammed the streets. Live video showed the police pushing protesters off the road while chanting, "Shame," and "We are the majority and we are in the streets."

The police arrested dozens, used cavalry and water cannons, and fired stun grenades at the demonstrators, severely beating them, and wounding many of them, including journalists who came to cover the events.

The demonstrators responded to the police practices by sitting in the middle of the streets, and it was documented that a group of police officers attacked a demonstrator and knocked him to the ground, while a policeman put his knee on the demonstrator's neck in order to paralyze him.
