Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid said on Monday that the time has come to make a deal to recover the hostages and end the war.
Lapid said, in statements reported by the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, "The war no longer brings any benefit other than security, diplomatic, and economic destruction. Hamas cannot be eliminated as long as there is no alternative government in Gaza. This is also the army's position."
He added, "The Israeli army needs to position itself between the border communities and the Gaza Strip, and develop a long-term plan to eliminate Hamas and encourage voluntary emigration. I understand the position of the far-right ministers and their desire to control Gaza forever, but this is an illusion. Our soldiers will continue to die."
