Talks scheduled between Lebanon and Israel in Washington on Monday will focus on the issue of an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, according to Israel's public broadcaster (IPBC) , as diplomatic efforts continue to address tensions along the border.
The broadcaster reported that discussions between the two sides are expected to center on arrangements related to the withdrawal of Israeli forces from areas in southern Lebanon, a longstanding issue amid ongoing security concerns.
No official statements had been issued by Lebanese or Israeli authorities regarding the agenda of the talks at the time of publication.
The meeting comes months after a ceasefire agreement helped reduce hostilities between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah following months of cross-border exchanges of fire that intensified after the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023.
Southern Lebanon has remained a focal point of international diplomatic efforts, with calls for the full implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah. The resolution calls for the deployment of the Lebanese army in southern Lebanon and the withdrawal of unauthorized armed groups from the area south of the Litani River.
Efforts to stabilize the border region have continued amid concerns that renewed clashes could undermine regional security and threaten the fragile calm achieved in recent months.
