Israel has approved lifetime security protection for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife, Sarah, following a decision by the ministerial committee overseeing the Shin Bet security agency.
According to Israeli media, the committee endorsed a recommendation by Shin Bet chief David Zini despite reported objections from security officials within the agency.
Under the decision, Netanyahu will receive lifetime protection, while Sarah Netanyahu's security coverage will remain in place for the duration of her husband's lifetime, with the option of an extension.
The couple's sons, Yair and Avner Netanyahu, will also receive state security protection, although their coverage will be limited to five years.
Israeli media reported that close associates of the Netanyahu family had lobbied for the measure, while security officials assessed that the prime minister and his family face a high level of threat from hostile actors.
