Five Iranian police officers were killed in an armed attack on a patrol in the restive southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan, state news agency IRNA reported on Friday.
According to Iran’s Law Enforcement Command, unidentified gunmen ambushed two police patrol vehicles along the Khash–Iranshahr highway in the Daman district of Iranshahr city.
Authorities said security forces are pursuing the attackers and working to establish their identities. No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the assault.
Sistan and Baluchestan, bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, has long been a flashpoint for clashes between Iranian security forces and armed groups, including separatists and militant organizations operating in the region.
The latest incident underscores the continuing volatility in the province, where Iranian forces frequently carry out counterinsurgency and anti-smuggling operations.
