Iraqi YouTube star Tiba Al Ali, 22, was killed by her father in the southern province of Diwaniya, interior ministry spokesman Saad Maan announced on social media.
Tiba resided in Turkey and was visiting Iraq to meet her relatives in order to “resolve the family dispute in a definitive manner”, Maan noted in his post.
Recordings of conversations between the daughter and her father circulated on Twitter and appeared to indicate that he was unhappy about her decision to live alone in Turkey.
The 22-year-old girl reportedly went to Turkey to escape the harassment of her brother after her family told her to "forget the matter" despite its horror.
"She was strangled at the hands of those who have no honor. She was killed at the hands of the complicity of society, its customs, and laws," one of the social media users said.
Maan said: “We were surprised the next day with the news of her killing at the hands of her father, as he admitted in his initial confessions.”
He did not give further details on the nature of the dispute.
Tiba had followers on YouTube, in which she posted videos of her daily life. Her Syrian-born fiancé was with her in Turkey.
She travelled to Turkey with her family in 2017, but she refused to join them upon their return. The police indicated that she chose to stay in Turkey instead.
“Women in our societies are hostage to backward customs due to the absence of legal deterrents and government measures – which currently are not commensurate with the size of domestic violence crimes,” wrote veteran politician Ala Talabani on Twitter.
