Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has ordered the nation’s armed forces to raise their level of readiness and remain vigilant in response to ongoing regional instability and emerging security challenges.
Speaking during a graduation ceremony for military academy cadets marking the 105th anniversary of the Iraqi Army’s founding, al-Sudani emphasized the essential role of the Iraqi Armed Forces as a cornerstone of national security and the defender of state stability. He underscored the need for heightened alertness amid ongoing conflicts and pressures across the Middle East.
“Today’s complex regional landscape demands that our military remain prepared and alert to defend Iraq’s sovereignty and stability,” the prime minister said in his address. He highlighted the armed forces’ historical role in safeguarding the nation and reaffirmed their commitment to fulfilling national missions.
Al-Sudani also reiterated the government’s efforts over the past three years to strengthen Iraq’s military capabilities through modern equipment, advanced weapons systems, and strategic planning. He pointed to the recently approved National Security Strategy for 2025–2030 as a key framework guiding Iraq’s defense and security priorities in the coming years.
In affirming the centrality of the military institution, the prime minister said the Iraqi Army has played a decisive role in defeating extremist threats and preserving social cohesion. He renewed the government’s commitment to restoring full state sovereignty, citing ongoing reforms to consolidate security and enhance bilateral defense partnerships with friendly nations.
While stressing readiness, al-Sudani also encouraged cooperation between the armed forces and other security services to ensure Iraq’s territorial integrity and protect civilians. The directive for increased vigilance reflects broader efforts within Baghdad to fortify national defense amid mounting pressures from external threats and shifting geopolitical dynamics.
