The Iraqi Council of Representatives (parliament) has voted to reopen the door for candidacy for the presidency of the country, after weeks of obstruction and negotiations in a country that has been experiencing a political stalemate for several months.

Today, Saturday, the Council held a session to pass the resolution to a vote.

And 265 deputies out of 329 who participated in the session voted in favor of the resolution. The number of voters in favor of the decision to open the candidacy for a period of three days was 203, while 62 deputies refused to vote.

The    Iraqi parliament failed to elect a new president of the republic in the previous sessions, despite the expiry of a 30-day period since its first session stipulated in the constitution, which prompted Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi to reopen the candidacy door for a second time on February 8.

A few days ago, the Federal Court considered that reopening the nomination door was unconstitutional unless it was subject to a vote in Parliament.
