The United Nations Human Rights Commission member Ali Albayati in Iraq announced on Tuesday that 18 people were killed and 800 wounded during the protests Iraq city of Karbala Monday.
"The information we received from activists, organizations and non-governmental organizations about the events witnessed yesterday in Karbala speaks of 18 of the demonstrators killed and more than 800 injured," member of the Commission Ali al-Bayati said in a statement received by Alsumaria News.
Thousands of Iraqis went out at midnight Monday, breaking a curfew announced by authorities in Baghdad.
"The curfew is to provide a cover for security forces to evacuate Tahrir Square," demonstrators said. They insist on staying in the streets.
The Baghdad Operations Command announced earlier a curfew in Baghdad and said in a statement that the curfew includes "persons and the movement of vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, and vehicles of various kinds," noting that it will continue "until further notice."
A source in the operations of the Iraqi Ministry of Health killed the first girl in the demonstrations in Baghdad and the provinces of southern Iraq.
The girl was among five people killed on Monday, a medical student hit by a tear gas canister, bringing the death toll to 83 in the second wave of protests since Thursday night in Iraq.
