Iraq has announced an initiative to deliver 320,000 tons of wheat to Lebanon via land, marking a significant move to support the country’s food security needs.
The announcement was made by Iraqi Trade Ministry official, Star Jabar Al-Jabri, on Monday following a meeting with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri at the Lebanese Presidential Palace in Ain el-Tineh, Beirut.
Al-Jabri revealed that the wheat delivery will take place after the situation in Syria stabilizes, allowing for a safe land route to be established. This delivery is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral ties between Iraq and Lebanon.
The initiative highlights the strong relationship between the two countries, as Iraq had previously provided refuge to over 57,000 Lebanese citizens during the last war, with approximately 6,000 still residing in Iraq.
This humanitarian effort is a continuation of Iraq’s support for Lebanon, particularly in the wake of the challenging circumstances the country faces.
Al-Jabri also discussed the mission of an Iraqi delegation visiting Lebanon to assess the situation in various regions, with two key objectives: delivering essential food and aid supplies to affected areas, including Syrian refugees, and preparing a report on the status of the situation to be presented to the Iraqi Cabinet.
The initiative also includes additional humanitarian assistance. On Sunday, the Iraqi Ministry of Trade confirmed that a delegation would soon visit Lebanon to discuss the possibility of Iraq contributing further aid, including food and medical supplies, to support Lebanon during this critical time.
The Iraqi government, under the direct supervision of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, had already taken emergency measures in response to the conflict in Lebanon and Gaza.
