Iraq began drilling its first exploratory oil well in the country's northern provinces in nearly five decades, marking a significant step in efforts to expand hydrocarbon reserves and revive exploration activity in underdeveloped regions.

The Iraqi Oil Ministry announced on Saturday that technical and engineering teams from the Iraqi Drilling Company have commenced operations on a new exploration well in the Amerli district of Salahuddin province under a tripartite agreement involving North Oil Company, the Iraqi Drilling Company, and the Oil Exploration Company.

According to the ministry, the project represents the first exploratory drilling operation in Iraq’s northern governorates since 1978, underscoring a renewed government push to assess untapped geological formations and strengthen the country’s long-term energy resource base.

The ministry described the well as a milestone in the revival of exploration activities in promising hydrocarbon regions after decades of limited development.

Officials said the initiative is aimed at identifying new oil and natural gas accumulations, expanding Iraq’s proven reserves, and supporting future production capacity in one of the world's largest energy-producing nations.

“The commencement of drilling operations marks an important stage in reactivating exploration work in prospective areas after a prolonged hiatus,” the ministry said in a statement.

The new project forms part of a broader strategy adopted by Iraq’s Oil Ministry to intensify exploration drilling and make greater use of geological and geophysical data in identifying commercially viable hydrocarbon resources.

Authorities view reserve growth as a critical component of the country's long-term economic and energy planning, particularly as global energy markets continue to evolve and competition among major producers intensifies.

The ministry said expanding the nation’s hydrocarbon inventory would provide additional resources to support economic development plans while strengthening Iraq’s position within the global oil industry.

Iraq's oil sector remains the backbone of the country's economy, accounting for the overwhelming majority of government revenue and export earnings. As a result, maintaining and increasing proven oil and gas reserves has become a strategic objective for policymakers seeking to safeguard future production potential.

The ministry noted that replenishing depleted reserves and securing new discoveries are essential to sustaining Iraq’s standing among the world's leading oil producers.
