On Thursday, Iraqi government spokesperson Basim Al-Awadi strongly condemned the Israeli forces' assault on displaced persons' tents in Gaza’s Khan Younis area, which resulted in over 60 fatalities.

In a statement carried by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Al-Awadi said, “As the world enters a new year, a time when peace, security, and justice are the aspirations of all humanity, Israeli occupation forces have once again escalated their aggression. Since last night, they have targeted displaced persons’ tents in Al-Mawasi, west of Khan Younis, and other areas in Gaza, leading to the deaths of more than 60 civilians, including women and children. Many others have been injured, some critically. This deliberate and recurring aggression further exacerbates the conflict, targets defenseless civilians, and undermines all prospects for peace and ceasefire efforts.”

Al-Awadi described the attack as "barbaric," noting that entire families were annihilated, leaving behind widespread devastation. “This brutal aggression is a blatant violation of international law, disregarding humanitarian principles and the rules of armed conflict. It is a savage assault on defenseless civilians, particularly at a time when they are in dire need of humanitarian aid amid harsh weather conditions,” he added.

He further emphasized the need for collective efforts to end the continuous atrocities against the Palestinian people, warning that the escalation could have devastating consequences for the entire Middle East region.

The statement called on the global community to step up efforts to prevent further escalation and provide urgent relief to Palestinians facing increasingly dire conditions.
