Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday, leading a high-ranking delegation on a three-day visit following an official invitation from Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani.
The visit marks Pezeshkian’s first international trip since his election on July 28.
According to the Iranian news agency IRNA, Pezeshkian is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with top Iraqi officials, during which both nations will sign cooperation agreements and security memorandums.
The Iranian president will also meet with Iranian expatriates in Iraq and engage with business leaders.
His itinerary includes visits to key cities such as Najaf, Karbala, and Basra.
Pezeshkian has emphasized the importance of strengthening relations with neighboring countries, a key focus of his administration.
In August, he highlighted that building stronger ties with neighboring states could help alleviate some of the pressures from international sanctions.
This visit comes amid heightened security concerns following reports of "unidentified objects" landing near Baghdad International Airport, close to a US Embassy logistics facility, according to an Iraqi security source.
Despite the tension, Pezeshkian’s visit underscores the ongoing efforts to fortify regional cooperation between Iran and Iraq.
