Iranian authorities support the rule of law in Russia and consider the events related to the Wagner Private Military Company (PMC) mutiny an internal affair of the country, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani said on Saturday.
"Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani has described the recent developments in Russia as an internal issue of the country, saying that the Islamic Republic of Iran supports the rule of law in the Russian Federation," the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a press statement posted on its website.
On June 23, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of Wagner PMC, published several audio recordings on the Telegram channel.
He privately claimed that his forces had been attacked, which he blamed on the country's military authorities. In this regard, the Federal Security Service (FSB) launched a criminal investigation into calls for armed rebellion.
Allegations of the attack on Wagner's "rear camps" were criticized by the Russian Ministry of Defense as fake news. The FSB warned Wagner's militants not to follow Prigozhin's orders and called on them to arrest him.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a televised address to the nation on Saturday, called the Wagner Group's actions an armed rebellion and treachery, and vowed to crack down on the rebels.
