Iran and Saudi Arabia are ready to reopen their respective embassies in Tehran and Riyadh and re-establish full diplomatic relations, according to an Iranian lawmaker.

Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi, a member of the Iranian parliament's Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy, tweeted on Saturday that relations between the two main regional powers are "reviving" and embassies are "getting ready to open."

"This has significant implications for decreasing regional tensions and promoting Muslim world cohesion," he continued.

He concluded by warning journalists and security organisations around the world to be wary of "Zionist depravity" and "extreme idiocy."

Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic ties with Iran in 2016, following an attack on the country's missions in Iran, which was provoked by the killing of Nimr Baqir al-Nimr, a famous Saudi Arabian Shia preacher.

Tensions between Shia Iran and Sunni Saudi Arabia have risen throughout the war in Yemen, as Riyadh intervened for President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi's side.

Despite the current tensions, Riyadh and Tehran began direct talks last year, but no substantive outcomes were achieved.

On January 10, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said that a new round of discussions would take place in Iraq later this year.
