Japanese media reported Wednesday that Iranian authorities have detained Shinosuke Kawashima, the Tehran bureau chief for Japan's public broadcaster NHK.
According to reports, the journalist was taken to Evin Prison in the Iranian capital, a facility frequently criticized internationally for its detention conditions, according to Agence France-Presse.
A spokesperson for NHK stated that the organization "places the safety of its employees at the top of its priorities," adding that "no further details can be provided at this time."
For his part, Japanese government spokesperson Masanao Ozaki confirmed that Tokyo received confirmation of the detention of a Japanese citizen in Tehran on January 20, without disclosing further information.
