Inernational reactions intensified following a U.S. military strike on Venezuela and the reported capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, drawing widespread concern and condemnation, Xinhua reported.
According to the report, U.S. President Donald Trump said the operation was carried out jointly with U.S. law enforcement agencies, resulting in Maduro and his wife being taken out of the country. Trump stated that Washington intends to oversee Venezuela until a political transition is achieved, without specifying a timeline.
The Venezuelan government strongly condemned the action, describing it as a “brutal and unilateral act of aggression” and called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council.
Several international leaders warned that the move violates international law and threatens global stability. Slovak President Peter Pellegrini said attacks on sovereign states without a UN mandate undermine international norms, while Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico warned the action could destabilize the post-war world order.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot cautioned that the operation could have serious repercussions for international security. In Latin America, Brazil’s ruling Workers’ Party condemned the strike and described the capture of Venezuela’s president as a violation of sovereignty that could endanger regional peace.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights urged restraint and de-escalation, stressing the need to protect civilians and uphold international human rights law. The African Union also called on all parties to avoid further escalation and emphasized the importance of a peaceful, Venezuelan-led solution.
