A wave of Instagram account takeovers appears to be continuing despite Meta's claims that it has fixed a security flaw linked to its AI chatbot.
According to reports, hackers exploited Meta AI by falsely claiming ownership of Instagram accounts and requesting that login details be linked to email addresses under their control.
The flaw allegedly allowed attackers to reset passwords and seize accounts, including some with rare and highly sought-after usernames.
Technology outlet TechCrunch reported that several compromised accounts featured short or valuable usernames often traded on the online "OG username" market. Other alleged targets included accounts linked to prominent public figures, although Meta denied reports that former US President Barack Obama's account was affected.
While Meta says the vulnerability has been fully resolved, some Instagram users continue to report account breaches. Discussions on Telegram channels have also suggested that attackers are still attempting to exploit the technique and sell compromised accounts online.
The incident has renewed concerns about AI-powered account management tools and the security measures used to protect social media users from unauthorized access.
