Instagram has officially released a version of its app tailored for Apple’s iPad, marking the end of years of user requests for a platform optimized for the larger screen.
Until now, iPad users were limited to either accessing Instagram through the iPhone app, which was not designed for tablets, or using the web version. The new application provides a full-featured experience and takes advantage of the iPad’s display.
By default, the app opens on the Reels feed, allowing users to scroll through short videos on a larger screen. The interface mirrors much of the smartphone version, with Stories displayed at the top and key functions such as posts, direct messages, search, explore, and notifications accessible via a sidebar.
The feed on the iPad app offers three viewing options: “All” for posts and recommended content from followed accounts, “Friends” for content shared by close contacts, and “Latest” for a chronological display of posts and videos. Users can also rearrange clips and posts based on personal preferences.
According to TechCrunch, the current iPad app is built on iOS but has been redesigned for tablet use, improving visual appeal and functionality.
For example, users can view comments alongside a video or manage conversations by opening a selected chat while keeping the full message list visible on the left-hand panel.
Despite Instagram’s presence for nearly 15 years, the company had consistently deprioritized development of an iPad version. Adam Mosseri, the platform’s head, had repeatedly stated there was no urgency in producing a tablet-specific app.
Earlier this year, however, The Information reported that Instagram had finally begun working on an iPad version, which has now been officially launched.
