Dr. Nevin Gamea, Minister of Trade and Industry, stressed that the Egyptian state gives great importance to the development of the dates sector, as it is one of the most important and promising productive sectors to achieve economic and societal development, increase exports and create new job opportunities.
She noted that Egypt ranks first in the world in the production of dates by 18%. And the first at the Arab level by about 23%.
This came in the context of the Minister’s speech during the opening of the activities of the “Fifth International Festival of Egyptian Dates in Siwa Oasis” in Matrouh Governorate, which is held under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
Ahmed Reda, Deputy Minister for Industry Affairs and Supervisor of Industrial Technology and Innovation Centers, addressed the attendees on behalf of the minister.
The festival was attended by in the Maj. Gen. Khaled Shuaib, Matrouh Governor, Lotfy Raouf, Indonesia’s Ambassador to Cairo, Dr. Abdel Wahab Zayed, Secretary -General of the Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation, and Dr. Amjad El Kady, Head of the Center for Food Industries Technology and Agricultural Industrialization.
The minister said that this festival is an important step towards advancing the dates' sector and increasing its competitiveness internationally, which contributes to upgrading Egyptian exports, providing productive job opportunities for young people, reducing unemployment rates, and achieving a new major breakthrough for the Egyptian economy that puts Egypt in its appropriate place on the map of global competitiveness.
She added that the dates sector in Egypt includes about 150 industrial facilities spread in various production areas in the New Valley, Buhiara Oasis, Siwa, Aswan, Luxor, Badrashin, Fayoum, Burj Al Arab, Amreya, Delta, Damietta and Sharqia.
