The death toll from a devastating train collision in Indonesia has risen to 15, with 88 people injured, as authorities launch a full investigation into one of the country’s deadliest rail accidents in recent years.
The crash took place on the outskirts of Jakarta near Bekasi, where rescue teams completed a complex operation to free passengers trapped inside heavily damaged train carriages. Emergency crews used hydraulic cutting equipment to reach victims pinned within twisted metal.
Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency confirmed that all those killed were women, as the collision occurred in carriages designated for female passengers.
Initial findings from the Ministry of Transport indicate that the accident was triggered when an electric taxi stopped at a railway crossing near East Bekasi station. This forced a commuter train to halt on the tracks before being struck from behind by a long-distance train traveling at high speed.
President Prabowo Subianto has ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the incident. After visiting injured passengers in hospital, he pledged sweeping reforms to improve rail safety, including the construction of overpasses to eliminate dangerous level crossings.
