Indonesia plans to purchase up to 200 helicopters next year to strengthen its defense readiness and improve emergency response to natural disasters, President Prabowo Subianto announced.
Speaking at the 61st anniversary celebration of the Golkar Party in Jakarta, Prabowo said the country faces rising disaster risks due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire. He noted that Indonesia continues to grapple with severe floods and landslides on Sumatra, according to Antara News.
Prabowo said Indonesia has already received five new helicopters this week, with more on the way. He confirmed that an order has been placed for 200 helicopters starting in January next year.
He offered condolences to communities affected by recent large-scale disasters, stressing that Indonesia remains resilient and capable of overcoming crises through collective action and rapid mobilisation.
Earlier Saturday, Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency reported a sharp rise in casualties from the floods and landslides on Sumatra, confirming at least 883 deaths, while more than 500 people remain missing.
