Indonesia may withdraw from the peace council established by US President Donald Trump if the platform fails to benefit Palestinians, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said.

Subianto reassured local Islamic groups that Jakarta would reconsider its participation if the initiative no longer serves Palestinian interests or aligns with Indonesia’s national priorities.

Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, recently joined the council and announced plans to contribute troops to a stabilization force in Gaza. The decision has drawn criticism from analysts and Islamic organizations at home, who argue that it could undermine Indonesia’s long-standing support for the Palestinian cause.

According to a statement from the government’s communications office, Subianto met with leaders of several Islamic groups Thursday evening to explain Indonesia’s decision to participate in the council.

During the meeting, Hanif Alatas of the Muslim Brotherhood Front said the president made clear that Indonesia would withdraw if the council fails to deliver meaningful support for Palestinians or conflicts with Indonesia’s national interests.

Earlier, the Indonesian Ulema Council urged the government to exit the council, citing concerns over the United States’ role in the ongoing war involving Iran.

Indonesia’s foreign minister has also said that discussions within the peace council have largely stalled due to the escalating regional conflict.
