A coffee promotion event held in Cairo underscored the depth of trade and cultural relations between Egypt and India, while spotlighting the distinctive position of Indian coffee in both global and Egyptian markets.
Speaking during the event, Ambassador of India to Egypt traced the historical rise of Indian coffee in Europe, with particular focus on Malabar Monsoon coffee. The variety gained its unique flavor centuries ago during long maritime journeys through the monsoon season before the opening of the Suez Canal.
As shipping conditions evolved, Indian producers preserved this traditional taste by recreating the same climatic exposure, helping cement Indian coffee’s international reputation.
The ambassador described Egypt as a promising market for Indian coffee, pointing to a dynamic economy and a predominantly young population whose tastes are rapidly evolving toward new flavors and coffee experiences. He praised the ongoing cooperation with Egyptian partners and called for stronger engagement to expand trade and investment opportunities between the two countries.
From the Egyptian side, Hassan Fawzy, Head of the Coffee Division at the Cairo Chamber of Commerce, said Indian coffee is a core ingredient in Egypt’s coffee industry, particularly in Turkish coffee blends, due to its balanced flavor and body.
He noted that Egypt has imported Indian coffee for decades and that the diversity of Indian Robusta and Arabica enables flexible blends catering to varied consumer preferences. Indian coffee accounts for around 25 percent of imports for some Egyptian factories, with plans to increase that share.
Fawzy added that coffee trade goes beyond economics, acting as a cultural bridge between nations. He commended the Indian embassy’s role in advancing cooperation and stressed the need to address challenges related to the availability of certain varieties and rising spice prices. Tackling these issues, he said, would further strengthen the strategic partnership between Egypt and India and support sustainable economic growth.
