India is set to pilot an artificial intelligence system to address the long-standing problem of stray cattle on urban roads in the western state of Gujarat, according to IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.

The pilot project is being prepared in Ahmedabad as part of the Gujarat government’s broader push to integrate artificial intelligence into public administration under its smart governance strategy. The initiative aims to improve the identification of stray cattle and their owners while cutting response times and reducing labor intensive processes.

The program follows the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence in Gandhinagar and reflects growing efforts by the state to use data driven solutions to manage urban challenges.

Stray cattle are a recurring safety hazard in Ahmedabad, frequently causing traffic congestion and road accidents. At present, municipal teams manually analyse CCTV footage and rely on microchips and RFID tags to identify animals. These electronic identifiers store data that can be accessed remotely using radio signals.

Under the pilot, a specialized AI model based on computer vision and deep learning is being developed in GIFT City. The system will process live CCTV feeds to detect stray cows in real time and match them with existing databases using distinctive physical characteristics such as facial features and nose patterns.

Officials say around 110,000 cows in Ahmedabad are already fitted with RFID tags and microchips, while CCTV cameras operate at nearly 130 intersections across the city. If the pilot proves successful, authorities expect it to improve road safety, ease traffic management and strengthen technology led urban governance across Gujarat.
