India's Defense Ministry admitted Friday that it mistakenly fired a missile at Pakistani territories.

The ministry explained in a statement that the missile launch came due to a mistake committed during maintenance work, noting that the accident did not result in casualties on the Pakistani side of the border and an investigation will be conducted into it.

For its part, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry summoned the Indian Chargé d'Affairs in Islamabad and expressed its strong protest against the "unjustified violation of its airspace by a hypersonic emergency object."

Islamabad and New Delhi demanded a "comprehensive and transparent investigation" into the incident, which is said to have occurred on Wednesday.

According to the Pakistani authorities, the missile landed near the city of Mian Shanu in Punjab state, causing damage to the property of local residents.

The two nuclear-armed countries have fought three wars and many military engagements, the last of which was in 2019 when the two countries' air forces clashed.
