India's Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned following nationwide protests over the leak of examination papers that disrupted one of the country's largest public exams.
In a statement, Pradhan said he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prevent the issue from being exploited politically and to ensure students could focus on their education while investigations continued.
The minister acknowledged irregularities in the examination held on 3 May 2026, saying the government had responded by launching an investigation and scheduling a retest.
The scandal triggered widespread demonstrations after authorities postponed the exams from May to June due to the paper leak. More than 2.2 million candidates took part in the examination across more than 550 cities.
Protesters blamed Pradhan for the security breach and demanded his resignation. In response, the Modi government has announced plans to introduce tougher penalties for examination fraud, fast-track related court cases and overhaul India's examination system to prevent similar incidents.
