India has officially completed the excavation of its longest road tunnel under the Himalayas, marking a major infrastructure milestone with strategic and economic significance.
The Zojila Tunnel, stretching more than 13 kilometers, will connect the regions of Kashmir and Ladakh, an area close to the border with China. The tunnel is expected to significantly improve year-round accessibility, especially during winter months when heavy snowfall blocks existing mountain roads.
The project, with an estimated cost of $712 million, involved more than 3,000 workers and is considered the longest tunnel ever built in India.
Authorities plan to open the tunnel for traffic in 2028, once final safety and operational preparations are completed. Once active, it will dramatically reduce travel disruptions and strengthen connectivity in one of the most geographically challenging regions in the world.
