A bus carrying Hindu pilgrims heading to a shrine in Indian-controlled Kashmir slid off a highway bridge into a Himalayan gorge, killing at least 10 people and injuring 55 others, police reported.

Police said the bus was on its way to the town of Katra from Amritsar in the northern state of Punjab when it fell into a gorge near the city of Jammu.

Local police officer Chandan Kohli told reporters that the bus was overcrowded. He added that the dead were from the eastern state of Bihar.

Residents and authorities rushed to the accident and launched a rescue operation. The injured were taken to the hospital.

The Vaishno Devi shrine at Katra is highly revered by Hindus and is visited by hundreds of thousands every year.

India has some of the highest road fatality rates in the world, with hundreds of thousands of people killed and injured annually.

Most of the accidents are attributed to reckless driving, poor road maintenance, and aging vehicles.
