The Independent, a daily UK newspaper, said that Britain's King Charles III and his spouse, Queen Camilla, had postponed their state visit to France in light of the clashes between the police and protesters in the country.

Charles' scheduled visit next week will be his first abroad since assuming the throne.

The news came after the historic Bordeaux city hall in France caught fire on the day that witnessed the largest protests ever against President Emmanuel Macron's controversial attempts to raise the retirement age.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said today, Friday, that France is ready to receive Britain's King Charles during his state visit, despite protests against pension reforms.

A Buckingham Palace source had said earlier this week that the protests could affect the visit, which is Charles' first since becoming king.

French President Emmanuel Macron is seeking to "calm things down" amid mounting anger across his country over his plan to raise the retirement age.
