Al-Azhar University President Prof. Mohamed Al-Mahrasawy inaugurated activities of the 3rd international conference on environment and sustainable development on Saturday.
The conference, entitled “Climate Change: Challenges and Confrontation”, is held under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi with the participation of experts from all over the world as well as Mohamed Abou El Enein, Deputy Speaker of the Egyptian Parliament.
“The conference is being held in light of Egypt’s hosting of the COP27 United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2022,” Al-Mahrasawy said, noting that the conference deals with conserving natural resources from the perspective of Islamic law.
In the same vein, it has a number of sessions with topics related to climate change that are entitled "The Role of Religious & Spiritual Leaders in Confronting Climate Change", "The Role of Egyptian Civil Society Institutions in Confronting Disasters Resulting from Climate Change", and "The Role of Space Science and Technology and Climate Change in the Light of Egypt’s Vision 2030".
Furthermore, Al-Mahrasawy affirmed that climate change is not without class discrimination, pointing out that developing countries suffer more from its negative effects, with the developed countries shirking their responsibility for these serious issues.
He concluded his speech by calling on the world to consider the future generations and how would they lead their lives if these practices that caused catastrophic changes did not stop.
