On Wednesday, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated that about 90 percent of Syrians today live below the poverty line, and more than 15 million people need humanitarian assistance.
The committee quoted, in a statement published on its official website, the regional director for the Near and Middle East of the committee, Fabrizio Carboni, as saying that “the international community must face the difficult truth that the situation in Syria is unbearable and that inaction will have serious repercussions for all concerned.”
Carboni added, "We cannot turn a blind eye to the suffering of the people in Syria, and we must prioritize preserving critical infrastructure and providing comprehensive humanitarian responses."
In its statement, the ICRC called on donor countries to make an immediate international commitment to preserving vital infrastructure and basic services in Syria.
It warned that the collapse of basic services in Syria is not a "distant threat" and will have devastating repercussions for the Syrian people.
