The International Court of Justice (ICJ), the United Nations’ highest judicial authority, ruled on Wednesday that Israel must support humanitarian relief operations in the Gaza Strip carried out by the UN and its agencies, including the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
The court, composed of 11 judges, stated that Israel had failed to provide evidence supporting its claims that a substantial number of UNRWA employees were affiliated with Hamas.
“The Court stresses that Israel must not use starvation as a method of warfare in Gaza and is obliged to facilitate the work of the United Nations and UNRWA,” the judges said in their ruling.
The ICJ further emphasized that Israel is required to ensure access to basic necessities for Gaza’s civilian population and enable the delivery of humanitarian aid, including UNRWA programs.
In response, Israel’s representative to the United Nations dismissed the ruling as “disgraceful,” criticizing the court’s position on UNRWA and its operations in Gaza.
