Today, the Icelandic authorities announced evacuations in the Blue Lagoon area and the neighboring town of Grindavik, due to a volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office said in a statement that lava was flowing rapidly towards northern Grindavik, almost identical to what happened during the volcanic eruption on February 8th.
The office added that the volcanic eruption led to a 3-kilometre-long ground fissure, extending from the Stora-Skojfell area to Hagafell.
The Blue Lagoon area is considered one of the most popular tourist areas in Iceland. It is located southwest of the Reykjanes Peninsula, which is home to the Icelandic Keflavik International Airport.
The Blue Lagoon area was evacuated due to seismic activity earlier this month, while it was closed for a week last November, after 1,400 earthquakes were recorded there.
