The International Criminal Court (ICC) is pressing ahead with investigations into alleged crimes committed in Sudan’s Darfur region, as calls intensify for an effective accountability mechanism to address ongoing violations.
Li Fung, representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Sudan, said the Office of the Prosecutor has recently confirmed the existence of evidence pointing to war crimes and crimes against humanity in El Fasher and other parts of Darfur.
In televised remarks to the program “African Harvest” on Al Qahera News, Li underscored the importance of ensuring justice for victims, noting that the UN human rights body supports expanding the ICC’s mandate to cover additional areas across Sudan.
She stressed that the Office backs any credible international or national mechanism capable of delivering accountability and preventing further abuses — whether through the ICC or independent investigative bodies.
Li also highlighted the urgent need for increased international funding for humanitarian operations, emphasizing that protecting the right to food and preventing the use of starvation as a weapon of war are central to safeguarding human rights in Sudan.
Her remarks come amid escalating violence and a deepening humanitarian crisis in Darfur, where international organizations have repeatedly warned of grave violations against civilians.
