Yesterday, the implementation of new closing hours for commercial shops began. I expressed my support for this trial when the decision was issued last week in this same column, titled "I Support Dr. Madbouly's Decisions," aiming to rationalize fuel consumption following the price hikes.
The implementation started yesterday amidst a wave of both support and opposition. Supporters advocate for the rationalization of consumption, while opponents argue that a segment of the population works at night and will be negatively affected by this decision—especially during these difficult times where the entire world is experiencing a state of economic and political madness.
We all know that rationalizing consumption is a necessity under these circumstances. However, at the same time, any decision that affects people's daily lives must be monitored after implementation, and its results must be re-evaluated.
The most important factor is the follow-up. The Prime Minister announced that the decision will be evaluated after one month, which is an important step. However, this evaluation requires monitoring tools on both the social and economic levels.
I hope there will be daily and weekly monitoring and study until the month concludes, and that there is a clear channel for communication. It has been announced that there is a phone number for receiving complaints and opinions so that the full picture can be captured.
Most of us know that shops in Europe close their doors at 8:00 PM to conserve energy and encourage early work hours; everyone has grown accustomed to this, you won't find a single shop, or even a supermarket, open on holidays.
In my view, the time has come for us to turn toward clean, renewable alternative energy, such as solar and wind power. Therefore, it is vital that we move in both directions simultaneously.
The question remains: Can we change the lifestyle in Egypt, a country accustomed to staying up late and shopping at night?
What happened yesterday is the beginning of a trail, and the coming month will be the deciding factor. The decision will either prove its success or reveal that it needs adjustment. The important thing is that we follow up, understand, and strive to reach what is best for everyone.
