Hydroponic Farming Expands in KSA’s Qassim

Hydroponic farming is gaining traction in Saudi Arabia’s Qassim Region as advanced agricultural technologies play an increasing role in improving crop productivity while conserving water.

The growth of this modern farming approach supports the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals, which emphasize sustainability, food security, and the efficient use of natural resources.

Hydroponics is a soil-free cultivation method in which plants grow in nutrient-rich water solutions that deliver essential elements directly to their roots.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), cited by TV BRICS, this technique enables faster and more controlled plant growth while significantly reducing water consumption compared to conventional agriculture.

A variety of hydroponic systems are now operating across Qassim to meet different crop and production needs.

The nutrient film technique provides a continuous flow of nutrients over plant roots, promoting rapid development.

Floating systems allow roots to grow directly in nutrient solutions, enhancing productivity while minimizing water loss.

Farmers also use inert growing media such as peat moss and perlite to stabilize roots and improve moisture retention and airflow, particularly for fruit-bearing crops.

More advanced aeroponic systems, where plant roots are misted with nutrient solutions, offer some of the highest levels of water efficiency and crop output.

These technologies are primarily implemented in greenhouses and specialized farming facilities, allowing for year-round production and precise environmental control.

As a result, hydroponic farming helps reduce dependence on chemical pesticides, improves product quality, and limits the spread of soil-related diseases, further strengthening the region’s agricultural sustainability.
