The death toll from Hurricane Helen has risen to more than 200, according to official U.S. sources. The hurricane swept through several southeastern states, leaving widespread destruction in its wake, making it the second deadliest hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland in over half a century, according to the Washington Times.
Hurricane Helen devastated hundreds of thousands of homes and claimed at least 200 lives across North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Virginia. This makes Helen the second deadliest hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland in more than 50 years, following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Despite hundreds of rescue operations across six states and the massive federal response involving more than 10,000 personnel to assist local first responders, the death toll is expected to rise. Many residents remain missing in remote mountainous areas, further complicating recovery efforts.
