Hunter Biden, the son of US President Joe Biden, officially pleaded guilty on Thursday to all nine charges in a tax fraud case, avoiding a new trial but without securing a plea deal for reduced sentencing.
Appearing before a federal court in Los Angeles, Judge Mark Scarci read the charges to Hunter Biden, to which he responded "guilty" to all counts, according to The New York Times.
The charges carry a potential sentence of up to 17 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
The judge scheduled the sentencing hearing for December 16.
The 54-year-old Hunter Biden is accused of failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes over the past decade, instead using the funds on personal luxuries, drugs, and sex.
Earlier in the day, Hunter Biden's lawyer informed the court that his client was ready to plead guilty while maintaining his innocence, a legal strategy allowed in US law. However, prosecutors rejected this proposal, insisting the case proceed to trial.
Faced with the prosecution's opposition, Hunter Biden decided to plead guilty to all charges without any agreement for a reduced sentence.
